Discipline(s): Oral Surgery
Course Overview:This is the most detailed wet-lab single day course available on extractions in dogs and cats as taught by specialists in the field of oral surgery! Learn all procedural techniques through direct 1:1 teaching and small group support as well as step-by-step videos of the surgical approach to exodontia of the four major teeth in both cats and dogs throughout the laboratory.
This 9 hour course will be 2.5 hours of interactive lecture and 6.5 hours of hands-on laboratory. Each participant will be working at their own stations with their specimens, equipment and instrumentation at specially designed dental training tables. Participants will work at their own pace and be encouraged to discuss techniques to enhance their abilities in oral surgery. Our teachers are board certified or residency trained and are accomplished in their skills and imparting these to general practitioners. This “Boot Camp” style education was designed to give the practitioner the confidence in their recommendations and the necessary skill sets to tackle moderate to severe dental disease.
Objective: Using a multitude of clinical images we pair the clinical pathological oral presentation with their radiographic findings as indications for exodontia.
After which we discuss the equipment, ergonomics of oral surgery, the necessary materials and techniques for success
Video techniques will stepwise depict the surgical approach to exodontia of the four major teeth in both cats and dogs and will run concurrently on the large monitors throughout the procedure room.
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
· Understand and select the appropriate high-speed burs for sectioning and bone reduction and osteoplasty and creation of the periodontal space to mobilize teeth prior to extraction
· Incorporate proper mucosal flap design, tension release and coverage of the extraction defect for minimalizing dehiscence.
· Reduce cortical alveolar bone, create periodontal space, utilize properly winged elevators.
· Understand proper elevation techniques and instrumentations
· Appropriate suturing of mucosal flap closures.
