Troubleshooting Tips for the Multiple-File Upload Feature

Because of limits on the number and size of files normally uploaded through the browser, we use a special Java applet that allows many files to be uploaded at once, with a very high file size tolerance.

Some users have experienced trouble with the multiple-file upload feature. Here are some troubleshooting tips to try if you are having problems.

If you still cannot get the function to work, feel free to e-mail the DMS programmer, Walt Rice, at ricew@stwing.upenn.edu or WaltRiceJr@gmail.com.

Try a different browser

Sometimes a configuration issue in your browser can prevent the applet from working properly, but it will work fine in another browser on your system. If you are using Internet Explorer, try Mozilla Firefox (available at www.firefox.com), or vice-versa.

If you are using an outdated browser, try updating to a more recent version. DMS, including the multiple-file upload feature, does not use any technology that requires a brand-new browser, but newer versions include bug fixes that may be preventing the applet from working on your computer.

Make sure your browser supports Java applets

  1. In your browser, go to "http://www.java.com" (link)
  2. Click the "Do I have Java?" link.
  3. Click the "Verify Installation" button.
  4. If you do not have Java installed, or have an older version, you will be offered a link to download the plugin software.

Try disabling your anti-virus software

One user determined that her anti-virus software was preventing the applet from running. Disabling the software temporarily permitted the multiple-file upload feature to work.

Make sure to re-enable your anti-virus software when finished with the DMS site.
